THE HORSE MISTRESS: BOOKS 1-4: A COMPLETE FANTASY MENAGE ROMANCE SERIES (60-DAY AUDIOBOOK RENTAL, LGBT). NARRATED BY GWENDOLYN DRUYOR.

My secret could save my people.
It will also destroy my life.

My name is Carivel. I was born female, but I've been secretly living as a boy in my adoptive village of Draebard, doing a job the elders insist could never be done by a woman. My life is complicated enough already, so the last thing I need is to fall for not one, but two unattainable men—a fierce warrior and a reluctant wolf-shifter with a horrific past.

Now, with the powerful Alyrion Empire poised to invade our lands, I must choose whether to keep my secret or reveal it… not only to the men I love, but also to the powerful female ruler whose army could help protect Draebard during the coming war.

Either way, strife is coming to our island.
Win or lose, things are about to change irrevocably for the three of us.

The Horse Mistress by USA Today bestseller R. A. Steffan is a 2016 Rainbow Award winning LGBT fantasy romance series.

This series is part of the Eburosi Chronicles:

The Horse Mistress (4 books)
The Lion Mistress (3 books)
The Dragon Mistress (4 books)
Master of Hounds (3 books)
Mistress of War (3 books)

While loosely linked, each series may be read on its own.

A special note for Fantasy readers: This series is polyam romance with steamy scenes and strong LGBT content. The main character is intersex and genderqueer. One of the love interests is a eunuch. If your gut reaction to any of that is “Eww” or even “Meh,” you probably won't enjoy these books.

Absolutely wonderful story

This story is a fantastic read. That really draws you in. Carevil, Andoc and Senovo are interesting and compelling characters. That are a joy to read about. I highly recommended this series. If you like great fantasy based stories. Especially ones with two sequel series. That take place in the same world.

Amazing

Honestly a great series. Grabs you at the beginning and holds you through the end. Makes you feel every emotion the characters feel. Will have you in tears at parts and celebrating the victories in others. I truly recommend this amazing series by this very talented author

Excellent series

Wonderful work, complex and detailed. Engrossing story of three people who find each other and find love and support and completeness together. Detailed world building and characters. Magic and humanity meet, mix and grow.

great read!

I loved the representation and how much care was taken in crafting each character. When I was younger I remember talking to my sister about what would life be like if the US was never colonized? I love how imaginatively this collection responds to that question. I’d like to read the next collection, great job author!

Wonderfully rich & complex

I love this series. I started ages ago with book 1 and have been hooked ever since. Even after quite some time and dozens of books inbetween, the story came back to me and all the emotional ties came to the forefront. The series sucks you in. It is a great read for those that enjoy m/f & mmf with a bit of kink.

Good enough that I read them all!

A really original premise, strong characters, and best of all strong female characters. In fact, the only thing that would improve it would be if the main three characters had been women, so each reversed (a shape shifting submissive eunuch female? Hmm, a dominant female, and a girl born into the body of a male). I liked the end of the last book as well very much—satisfying. Edited because I forgot to add—it features horses! yes, more horses would be even better!!). :-)

SOOOOO GOOD!!!

RA Steffan has done it again! She is a brilliant writer! I am more sure than ever that this is the way the world should be. Most men shouldn't be left alone and don't do well by themselves. Having two men (or more) to take care of everything would make life move along so much smoother and would end up a good thing for everyone. By the end of this book set, I was so happy that they'd all found each other and were accepted by their community. It's too bad the world today refuses to do the same....what would it hurt to let people love who they love? It would certainly help those good Christian folk stop having to sneak around like it was wrong....oops, did I let my non-Christianity-slip show?

Niche perfection

I got the first book in the series for free and I loved it so much I bought the rest of the series because honestly it was such a fantastic niche fit for me I wanted to read more and I was not disappointed. This has been one of the most fantastic literary experiences of my life. As a genderqueer person in a polyamorous relationship who is also into kink and service, this book really hit home for me and I actually cried at times because of how accurately my own feelings were described in this story. I wish there were more books out there like this one. Fantastic.

Not a true for warning but a good storyline

Honestly this book wasnt what i expected. Im all for expermenting and understanding sexuality. Thats totally ok and amazing. People are all different and have different preferences. However the author truly does not prepare you for those differences this books is MMF However the female considers herself a male. Sooo alot of things are changed to represent that. Im glad there are authors who do this representation because there are realationships like this however for me I had to skip alot of scenes because it wasn't my forte. As well there is BDSM scenes this should be forewarned for some people. As far as story line goes it was interesting and totally not what I expected. This story focuses a ton on the characters and them overcoming the norm of their village while preparing for war. The drama leading up to it was great but was hugely anticlimactic. I feel like there could have been so much more details to the final battle which was only in a small chapter and a half. Really was disappointing.

A must read

I absolutely could not put these books down, except towards the end because I didn't want it to end. It sucked me in to the unique story, vivid characters and fabulous writing. It deals with homosexual predolictions and a woman who would rather be a man. There are plenty of erotic scenes, but is not the main story. It is about the love of three unique individuals who overcame their own demons by their love for each other. This all happens in a time long ago, when their issues would have been an outrage. Keep the series going please.

A fantastic read

I enjoyed it a lot but there were some things that I missed. Mostly the ending seemed so abrupt. I wish there was more of Senovo being away and the other 2 on their own. I also wish more of the fight was there. Then what about Favion's dream? Does he share it and do they stop it. Does Frella start calling them her parents? Will they ever get to have their own children (like she decides she can try for them)? Just an abruptly quick ending that left me with so many unanswered questions but the story itself was amazing!

A fantasy series with lots of alternative ****

After listening to the first **** scene which was around an hour long and had me uncomfortably squirming and grimacing for much of that hour, I decided the fast forward button was my friend. Not the 15 seconds forward button, but the bigger arrow that goes to the next chapter. These **** scenes are long, and they include everything but traditional **** between the three love interests (a warrior, a eunuch, and a person who sexually identifies as a man but has a woman’s body).I bought the book because it was on sale, sounded interesting, and, well, horses. The story itself is good, and I kept listening to the book because I was interested in spite of being uncomfortable since I wanted to find out what happened next. But I really ought to pay more attention to the book description and read a few reviews before I plunge into a book by an author I haven’t read before. I’m just glad I didn’t buy the author’s other audio books that were on sale too.I think it would be wonderful if this author would offer a PG13 version of this book for younger or more sensitive readers. There are some young adults who could use heroes in less traditional romantic relationships that they could relate to.The narrator of the audiobook does a good job with the book, and I applaud her for making things more palatable with her reading. So if you like long, alternative **** scenes, this might be the series for you. Otherwise, prepare to fast forward a lot or just read a different book.

Great fantasy series

This series has a little of everything to satisfy all tastes. It takes place in a Game of Thrones type world where trebuchet siege engines and the recurve bow are the latest technology. There is some magic involved, i.e. shapeshifters, foretelling of future events. The romance involves three people MFM. There is some angst, some suspense, but the romance is the main theme. The world building holds up pretty well I think, and the books are well writtenThis series has explicit sexual scenes. The **** is not vanilla. Minimal use of bad language. This series is not for you if you are looking for clean and cozy.

Hold your Horses!

This was a total surprise. I received this entire series through other authors and what a gift. I do like menage stories but this one blew me away. It was so different from anything I had ever read before and the detail of their mindsets, their feelings and their outlook on life was so unique. First of all it takes place in a time long ago. (I must admit I would have liked to know when that actually was but that is not revealed.) Secondly, it focuses on prejudice against; homosexuals, women and anything that is different from the norm. The way it is addressed is really unusual especially for the times that they were in and how backward the society was then. The three of them were way ahead of their time and were extremely brave. I do not want to give too much away because it will spoil the surprise even though other reviewers have done that already. The writing was very expressive and poignant but at times I thought that some of the wording was a little too contemporary. Other than that, I would recommend this book for anyone who is looking for something very different and interesting. Even if you are not into menage, this is a love story not an erotic novel.

Interesting.

Okay. I'm not a fan of graphic **** scenes. So I skipped through them. And there was a lot of skipping. That said? Characters were well written. Not one dimensional. That is one of my criteria for an enjoyable book. I have to feel some emotion towards the characters. The storyline was interesting too. I'm glad I read the entire book collection too. All of the books were short. Together they made one book. If I'd read them one at a,time, I doubt I would have read more than one.

Not your average MMF (it’s better)

As a genderqueer individual, it’s so difficult to find works that resonate with that aspect of myself. Carivel’s journey of self acceptance was one of these rare instances. The story is wonderful, the characters are multifaceted and each charming in their own rights, and reading of the love Carivel, Senovo, and Andoc have for each other is such an enjoyable experience, not to mention the chemistry they have with each other is absolutely searing in intensity.

Immersive, compelling, emotional. Explores issues of gender identity. Different but beautifully w...

3.5 to 4 starsThis was an interesting read. The series kind of breaks the mold. It is a medieval/Bronze Age style fantasy series that uses that medium to explore some pretty unique topics for a romance.Carivel (Cara) is the MC - a woman who ran from her village because she desperately wanted to work with the horses and women were not allowed to do that. She identifies herself as a man (I guess the medieval equivalent of someone that would today become transgendered). She is disguised in her new village as a boy and is the assistant to the Horse Master, hiding that she is a woman, and trying not to show her attraction to two men in the village.Senovo is one of the two love interests. He is a eunuch priest who was made so without his consent. He also happens to be a wolf shifter, though he keeps that a closely guarded secret and is desperately ashamed of being one. He does his best to keep his wolf locked away.Andoc is the second love interest. He is the second-in-command to the village chief. He is also in love with Senovo and they have a rather clandestine relationship (well, the village sort of knows about it, but no one talks about it). When their village is attacked, Cara is injured, but Senovo saves her life in his wolf form. It is the first she learns of their relationship and Senovo's wolf form; and the first they learn of her being female. These secrets bring the three of them together. The Horse Master Cara has been apprenticing under is killed in the same attack, and Cara is appointed as his replacement (Horse Master - no one knows she is female still). The story proceeds from there and explores not only issues of gender identity and dysphoria, but also same **** and bisexual relationships. It also explores the impact of the loss of one's sexual organs. The fantasy/paranormal story itself is very well done. The characters are well-drawn and easy to emotionally engage with (even for someone like me that does not personally identify with the more unusual themes explored). The plot is well-paced and quite engaging. I couldn't put it down. (In fact, I intend next to read The Lion Mistress, a spin off series by the same author that sounds like a slightly more traditional paranormal RH/menage.)I will say that all of these issues are handled extremely well, with sensitive, sensual and emotional **** scenes amongst all three parties (all three together, or in varying combinations). And Andoc is a sensitively drawn Alpha male. So there is a little bit of everything here (except for vaginal penetration, there is none of that in this series at all). The only thing I was missing was a true female character (since that is what I am looking for and identify with the most). I personally found myself wishing she would allow more traditional intercourse. But that was just a personal issue, not an issue with the series and how it was written. If none of these thematic issues bother you, this would be a very interesting and different read. I recommend it.Note: This is not your typical paranormal romance, but I did not have a category that fit exactly, and I didn't want to make a new one just for this series. I would call this fantasy/paranormal menage (with only two love interests, it is not RH, and it is only barely paranormal, really more fantasy oriented, though there are werewolves).Warnings: There is graphic **** here of multiple varieties (MM as well as MF and MMF and MFM, and anal ****). It is sensitively done, but if that is not your thing, steer clear.

Most original series I have read in years! 10 stars!!!!

Welcome to Eburos, a bountiful island. Rich in flora, fauna, and minerals. Most of the island is populated by many different Bronze Age tribes, living mostly peacefully together. But to the south, in the lands of the Rytheeri tribe, the Iron Age Alyrion Empire has gained a foothold on the island. But north of the mountains that bisects the island (like Hadrian’s Wall cuts across England) most tribes live simply. The warriors train daily, while the eunuch priest deal with the spiritual matters, and a small team of men and boys care for the precious herds of horses. Even though Draebard was near the mountain foothills they had not worried about the army building on the other side of the pass.Twenty-three year old Carivel has a terrible secret. Working with the clans’ horses as the assistant to Jorun the Horse Master is a dream comes true. But when their village is attacked in the middle night by a company of Alyrion soldiers, after the chief and half the warriors had been lured away, life changes for everyone. When Chief Volya wants to try to negotiate a defense treaty with the nearby Merens, he has to decide who to send. He sends Carivel with two others to plead their case. How was Volya to know that the secrets that this new team carried would change the very fabric of life on Eburos? This is the complete four book series plus a short epilogue story. Follow the new trio as they try to navigate the trials of their new world. Carivel now leads in the horse pens. Andoc is the first warrior and most likely to follow Volya as chief. While his best friend Senovo is the only novice priest to survive the massacre. How can this grief-stricken crew fix the problems facing Eburos while trying to learn about each other? Each book is a wonder of original writing and plot twists. The main characters are complex and endearing. And the supporting cast is three dimensional and believable. The detail is rich and pulls you into their world, and you never want to leave. When you read one of the passages where Carivel is taming a horse you almost choke on the dust. There are male on male, BDSM, and Ménage a trois elements. This is the first book that I've ever read by this author. I was instantly sucked into a wonderfully detailed trial of three people in love. Most Ménage books that I've read do not go into the problems that the couple faces in everyday interactions with their neighbors and town. These books deal with problems in their relationships and how the relationships affect everyone around them. These books have also have their dark elements, as is to be expected when at war.The audiobook is beautifully brought to life by the renowned Gwendolyn Druyor. Her portrayal of Carivel is spot on. Just how I had heard it on my head the first time I read the books. I love this series, it is the only series I have on audiobook. I now wait impatiently for the next book in the new series The Lion Mistress. That continues the tales of Eburos and her people. The Lion Mistress: Book 1 (The Horse Mistress 5)

Not your typical romance

I want to start by saying how much I appreciate the author being inclusive in their work in regards to gender identity. I am not one who has first hand experience in it but I still love seeing everyone represented to some degree in literary works. With that being said, this romance isn’t a typical MF or even a MMF read. We follow a female character who truly identifies as a man in a born female’s body and will continue to do so through the entire series. If that isn’t something you enjoy to read or can appreciate, then this series may not be for you.Overall, I really did enjoy the series with the relationship building between the 3 main characters, the daily struggle with sexism and judgment from the public, the world building, and the overall plot with the upcoming invasion of their island. The world was interesting and more archaic than what I typically read but I loved the setting.I plan on reading more from this author and diving deeper into this world of Eburosi.

Touching, sensitive, insightful

The Horse Mistress series explores sexuality and sensuality in ways that few have ever thought about. It looks at the depth and meaning of family and familial relationships while weaving in insight, forgiveness, reconciliation and letting go.These are not easy topics but they are delicately woven through a story based on 3 strong characters, their love for one another and the need to protect their village from invading forces. This is no hearts and flowers book, and yet it's one of the most beautifully romantic stories I've ever read. Not only does it entertain, but it draws you to walk a mile in someone else's shoes while giving you some tools to do so.
